Captive Shadow…always in the background wanting to break free, but too shy to step into the light.
I’m Jacqui, from Auckland, New Zealand. I love photography and I love creative writing and spend much of my free time (which admittedly is not as much as I’d like) pursuing both outlets of my creativity.
Looking back, I loved photography before I knew I loved photography. There were a number of moments growing up when the signs were there but I never pursued it for a number of reasons, cost, lack of knowledge of where to start (these were the days before you learnt everything on YouTube and Google) and a belief that I was useless at all things creative.
The defining moment was when I was 25. I suddenly went from perfectly okay, to in hospital in a lot of pain. Thankfully, the cause was determined and 3 weeks later, after an operation, I was on the mend. But what it did teach me was how quickly things can change. So I decided it was time to get my camera.
It was a slow start, but over the years I’ve taught myself more and more with the help of books, YouTube, a beginners night course and my friends. My biggest challenge though has always been my lack of confidence. In school, I always went to the sciences, where the answers were more black and white compared to the subjective word of art, where what one person hates, another person loves.
To showcase my work here is a challenge in itself and shows me how far I’ve come in over coming my internal demons. This is my creative journey. I’m looking forward to taking you with me.
My favourite photography genre is portraiture. But I also love to go on a walk and just see what I can see, whether it be bugs, sweeping landscapes or city architecture.
If you would like to get together for a portrait session, please get in touch with me. My details are provided on the contacts page. I’m always looking for people eager to be in front of a camera.
